Inspired by the topographical maps produced in surveying, this woodblock print, when repeated horizontally, reveals the female figure buried within. Using the personification of mother earth, present in many cultures around the world, Surveying Gaea focuses on the exploitive nature of the male gaze. Based on an individual’s values, beliefs, and experiences the woman hidden between the lines can be confronting, rejecting, withering or neglecting the frame for which she is placed.
